Collection: Venus Flytraps and Sundews

The latin name for sundew plants is Drosera.  They have a sticky trap to catch bugs for fertilizer!   Sundew plants grow wild on almost all the continents, so as you might expect they vary dramatically.  Drosera capensis and Drosera binata 'Marston dragon' can make leaves all year and are less cold-hardy; they are from warm-temperate areas of the world.  Cape sundew is compact so its the best choice to catch fruitflies on your windowsill.  Threadleaf sundew, or Drosera filiformis is a native of the Southeast United States.  It is best grown outdoors with your pitcher plants and venus flytraps; it prefers a climate that is closest to its native habitat.  

Dionaea muscipula or venus flytraps, are a snappy native perennial that catch bugs for fertilizer.  They are the most iconic of the carnivorous plants because they are one of the only plants to employ an "active trap" to capture bugs.  Please treat your venus flytraps as perennials because they are perennials.  Plant Dionaea in full sun to part shade outdoors.  Use peat moss in a very large planter.  Water from below with a saucer or in a water feature.  Or for the lowest maintenance, plant your venus flytrap in a bog garden. Cold hardy to 20F in a pot and 0F in the ground.
